What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is the treatment of the whole body focusing on its structure and function. Essentially, the goal is to liberate any restriction affecting proper function of the nerve, artery, vein and lymphatics allowing the body to self-heal and self-regulate.

Osteopathic Manual Therapy works to restore proper body mechanics, nerve impulses and the circulation of body fluids. As an Osteopathic Manual Therapist, our goal is to promote self-healing capacity through gentle non-invasive manual therapy.

Some forms of treatment that are utilized within a Osteopathic Manual treatment include:

History of Osteopathy

Osteopathy was founded by American Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in Kirksville, Missouri in 1874.Dr. A.T. Still began his education as a Physician, however, when he lost is 3 sons to spinal meningitis, daughter to pneumonia and his wife while giving birth, he gave up all he had learned about medicine. Devastated that medicine was unable to help save his family, Dr. Still began looking for a new form of health care. Dr. Still came to learn that the body has the ability to heal itself. In order to do this, the correction of the anatomical structures must be completed. This in turn will improve the nervous system, as well as improve blood flow to and from structures, as well as other bodily fluids promoting health.

Dr. A.T. Still believed that in order to be effective, you must focus on treating the patient rather than treating the disease.
